Winter Solstice

Today, the Earth begins its northern travel around the sun. In terms of daylight, today is the shortest day with the longest night on the calendar. From today, daytime gets extended little by little, until December 21. Today is called Makar Sankranti in Sanskrit.

All of us should focus on this atmospheric change. Rishis encourage us to think of huge, cosmic changes which would cause our mind not to be weighed down by little, petty things in everyday life.

I would come out this morning to watch the sun when it is in full view. I would say "Om Sooryaaya Namah", and thank God for the presence of the sun, and also think of the benefits that the sun brings to life on earth.

Namaste. Happy Winter Solstice.
