SWAYAM-VARA - SELF-CHOICE IN MARRIAGE
[Question: Should parents, or anyone else, dictate choices for marriage partners? No, because] the best marriage is that in which the two partners willingly choose each other [without either of them feeling forced]. This self-choice, called Swayam-vara, was a beautiful marriage procedure practiced by followers of Vedic culture in ancient India.
[Young people must make their own choices. They should have the final say. When they make judicious choices themselves, there is less likelihood for disagreement in their married relationship, and children born from such a union will be strong in values. The people who really matter in a marriage are the bride and groom. It is they who will be happy in harmony, or unhappy in disharmony].
If necessary, parents may give permission for the marriage only after the two contracting partners will have freely accepted each other. Parents would be satisfied only if their married children could live in harmony and happiness.
Prosperity, wealth, fortune [and honor] dwell permanently in that family where husband and wife are both pleased with each other. On the other hand, you will find misery, poverty and disgrace hovering wherever husband and wife constantly disagree, argue and quarrel.
