POST

Lal Bahadur Shastri

Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second Prime Minister of India, the first being Jawaharlal Nehru. He was born October 2, 1904. As Prime Minister, he was known for his simple, austere life-style, qualities that other politicians of India do not possess. He initiated two major revolutions in India, the White One [to increase the production of cow's milk], and the Green One [to increase the production of more grains]. Both were aimed at overcoming starvation and feeding the increasing population of India. His powerful slogan was Jai Jawaan, Jai Kisaan - Glory unto the soldier and Glory unto the farmer, because he thought that more than any other section of people who served the nation, these two were most important.

Lal Bahadur Shastri passed away on January 11 1966, after having signed the famous Tashkent agreement to end the war between India and Pakistan. Historians saw his death as a glorious one. The thing to remember is that Lal Bahadur died a pauper, because, unlike rulers of his time, he did not loot the national treasury.

In my mind I honor two national leaders of India - Vallabh Bhai Patel, India's first Home Minister and Lal Bahdur Shastri. You still hear people in India speak about both of them in glowing terms. Please google their names. You may be inspired.
